Vaccines Under Fire - Millions of kids risk mercury poisoning

Kids in the United States get 21 shots before starting the first grade - more than twice as many as a decade ago. That breaks down to 3 shots of hepatitis b, 5 of DTP, 3 Hib, 4 polio shots, 2 measles-mumps-rubella, 1 chicken pox and 3 oral rotavirus vaccines.

Some parents are more afraid of the vaccines than they are of the vaccine-preventable diseases, but the vast majority of parents get the 'baby shots' their doctors recommend without question. Parents of children with autism are convinced that the condition was caused by receiving multiple vaccines shortly after they 'popped' out of the womb.

Several advocacy groups have raised the possibility of a link between vaccinations and autism, a connection between diabetes and the meningitis-fighting Hib vaccine and an association between the hepatitis b vaccine and multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimune disorders.

A stunning increase of 173% between 1993 and 1998 in the number of children diagnosed with autism has schools straining to provide services and health officials urgently seeking answers. These increases are fueling a grassroots movement of parents determined to expose what they believe is a connection between autism and vaccines. California had a 273% increase in the past decade. Autism, a developmental disability that usually appears before a child's third birthday, profoundly affects communication and social skills, impairing the child's ability to play, speak and relate to the world.

The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), a parents' information group reports that as more and more vaccines are being put on the market more cases of vaccine injuries and deaths are being reported. The NVIC, a non-profit organization founded in 1982 by parents of vaccine injured children, worked with Congress to develop the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986. The NVOC has played a leading role in obtaining a purified, less toxic pertussis vaccine for American babies, which was licensed by the FDA in 1996. The goal of the organization is to prevent vaccine injuries and deaths through public education.

The NVIC welcomes the decision by the US Public Health Service and the American Academy of Pediatrics to eliminate the mercury content in hepatitis B vaccine and other childhood vaccines and to roll back the universal recommendation that all newborn infants receive hepatitis B vaccines at birth. The cumulative effects of mercury can cause brain damage. Thimerosal, a mercury compound, is used as a preservative in hepatitis B, diphtheria, pertussis and acellular pertussis, tetanus and Hib vaccines. Most infants have received a total of 15 doses of these mercury-containing vaccines by age six months. Eliminating mercury from childhood vaccines as an important safety initiative. Further evaluation of the cumulative toxic effects of other vaccine ingredients, such as aluminum used as an adjuvant, will also be undertaken in compliance with the FDA Modernization Act of 1997.

Ono June 8, 1999, the Food and Drug Administration asked vaccine makers to phase out vaccines that contain the preservative thimerosal, citing concern over low levels of toxic mercury. By this fall, thimerosal-free vaccines shoudl be available. Thimerosal has been used as an additive to vaccines since the 1930's because it is very effective in killing bacteria and preventing bacterial coontamination, particularly in opened multi-dose containers. Thimerosal is a crystalline organic mercurial antiseptic used especially for its antifungal and bacteriostatic properties making it an inexpensive method of increasing the shelf life of vaccines.

As the USA is phasing out the use of thimerosal in vaccines, the World Health Organization says that is not an option for developing countries, due to practical constraint and high cost.

On July 15, 1999, federal health officials temporarily suspended use of the rotavirus vaccines, which prevents a common cause of infant diarrhea, after receiving 15 reports of babies suffering a life-threatening bowel obstruction called intussusception. Intussusception is the telescoping of the bowel into itself. When this happens, there is a compromise of the vasculature of the bowel. Therefore, the bowel cannot be fed nutrients and part of the bowel can potentially die, or necrose. When this happens, the child will have persistent vomiting, bloody bowel movements, abdominal distention, and severe colicky abdominal pain. In September 1999, the reported cases of intussusception had risen to 99.

In June, doctors were advised to use injected, instead of oral polio vaccine, because the oral vaccine contains live virus. Last year, only eight cases of polio were reported and all were caused by the oral vaccine.

Officials at the American Academy of Pediatrics say that nothing is risk-free, but for every vaccine that is recommended, the benefits far outweigh the risk of getting the natural disease.

Some parents say they fear that vaccines, most notably hepatitis b, may be causing an autoimmune response in which the body's immune system sees its own tissue as foreign and attachs it. That can lead to chronic illness.

Parents are questioning the required immunization schedule for children to protect them from diseases they are either not likely to contract, or that will not make them very sick. For instance 99% of the children that get chicken pox do fine.

Babies are not at risk of getting hepatitis b. It is a disease of sexually promiscuous people and drug users, but yet babies get an injection of hepatitis b within 12 hours after being born. The only newborn infants at risk for hapatitis B infection are those born to hepatitis B positive mother. One study revealed that only 0.2 percent of new mothers are hepatitis B positive.

Measles appear to have been all but wiped out in the USA, the centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. There were only 100 recorded cases last year, a record low. All but 29 were linked to infections that were brought into the country from abroad. The CDC says its latest data suggest measles in no longer indigenous to the US, meaning it appears there are no more strains of the virus continually circulating in the nation.

In November, an advisory committee of the FDA is scheduled to discuss whether a vaccine for childhood pneumonia devloped and tested on 38,000 children by the Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories should be approved for secually promiscuous people and drug users but yet babies get an injection of hepatitis b within 12 hours after being born. The only newborn infants at risk for hepatitis B infection are those born to hepatitis B positive mothers. One study revealed that only 0.2 percent of new mothers are hepatitis B positive.

Isabelle Claxton, spokes-woman for the vaccines division of Merck, said the company is accelerating production of Comva, and will also make thimersoal-free pediatric single-does Recombivax HB available by September. She does not anticipate these changes will significantly increase the cost of Merck's hepatitis B vaccines. As for her feelings about the new recommendations. Ms Claxton agrees with DR. Abramson and Dr. Zimmerman, "Physicians should realize that the issue is not 'safety', but 'safer'. They have not been poisoning babies since 1930.'
