The Quiet Epidemic: The Assault on the American Mind -

From autism and learning disabilities in children to Alzheimer's disease and depression in adults, the increase in neurological diseases is growing at an astronomical pace. Neuroleptic drugs, like Prozac and Valium are being prescribed to millions, while others choose to use natural remedies such as St John's Wort and Kava Kava. Mindell states that there are 17 millions people in the US suffering from depression. What has gone wrong? Why does mental disease exist today, when it was rare 40-50 years ago? What has happened to our children to require so much Ritalin for attending school? What occurred to produce this quiet epidemic?
There are many neurotoxic (meaning toxic to our nervous system) substances, which result in neurological disorders or CNS damage. The most common neurotoxic substances are mercury (found in 'silver' dental fillings), fluoride (found in our water, toothpaste and mouth rinses) and vaccinations (found in our local doctor's office). These substances are able to produce damage to our nervous system and create many neurological disorders common today.
Fluoride and Neurological Disorders:
Although many studies have evaluated the effects of fluoride on dental hard tissues, few studies have considered the long-reaching effects of fluoride on the CNS soft tissues and the neurotoxic effects on the developing brain in children. Mullenix and her associates studied the effects of fluoride on the developing brain. They correlated a direct relationship between fluoride plasma levels and the severity of the effect on the brain Li X S, et al, and Zhan, L B, et al, studied the effects of flluoride on children's intelligence.
Waldbott found that fluoride causes many neurological disturbances including: pituitary disorders, CNS damage, enzyme inhibition, depression, nervousness, calcium/phosphorus imbalances, and thyroid gland problems. Fluoride also inhibits neurological enzymes like glutamine synthetase, which is needed for normalizing acetyl-choline, and essential neurotransmitter. Finally, fluoride affects calcium, magnesium and phosphorus metabolism, which will have a profound effect on our nervous system, since it depends on these minerals for its function.
Mercury and Aluminum
Mercury had been documented as a potent neurotoxin long before the Minimata incident and many researchers have confirmed the role of mercury as a neurotoxin. Neurobehavioral disorders are well-recognized among the adverse health effects of exposure to mercury. Mercury damages astrocytes (CNS cells) and that offers a potential explanation for its neurotoxicity. Eggleston and Nylander also found a direct correlation between the number of amalgam fillings and the mercury concentration in the brain. The neurotoxicity of mercury and its compounds has been well demonstrated.
Since the main exposure of the general population to mercury is from dental amalgam fillings, researchers have been looking at human autopsies, which reveal significantly higher mercury concentrations in brain and kidneys of subjects with amalgam restorations. They noted, 'Studies have demonstrated that mercury is ...implicated... in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD).' There has been a lot of evidence linking mercury exposure to mental and psychological disorders, such as anxiety, tension, depression, memory loss and even hallucinations, manic-depression, suicide-attempts and melancholia. Silberud et al stated. 'The findings presented here suggest that mercury poisoning from dental amalgam may play a role in the etiology of mental illness.'
Aluminum is an established neurotoxin and has been shown to alter the blood brain barrier, which regulates the exchange between the CNS and peripheral circulation. Since aluminum is a membrane toxin and is capable of altering membrane function at the blood brain barrier, it may be implicated directly with the development of Alzheimer's disease.
Vaccinations and Neurological Disorders
Vaccinations are very neurotoxic and have been associated with many neurological disorders, like encephalopathies, epilepsy, convultions, ADD, LD, autism, mental retardation, depression, anxiety, CNS disorders, paralysis, Guillain-Barre Syndorme, nerve deafness, blindness and SIDS. The neurological disorders assocuated with vaccinations are legion. Vaccinations lower our IQ, as well as contribute to overt mental disorders and neurological diseases. The relationship of vaccinations to encephalopathies and neurological diseases have been surfacing in medical journals since the advent of vaccinations. Autism was unheard of before vaccinations, and parallel mass vaccination programs nicely. ADD and learning disorders in children are now being traced to childhood vaccinations, as well as convulsions, paralysis, and epilepsy. Brain damage is by far the most common adverse reaction associated with vaccinations, although their actual numbers are not often reported correctly.
Vaccinations have the ability to lower the IQ of our childrean as the result of the neurological damage and altered brain development they cause. Unvaccinated children are brighter, more intelligent, walk sooner and talker sooner and have higher Iqs - on average - than their vaccinated comrades? The pertussis vaccine is very neurotoxic and is used in the laboratory to produce brain lesions in lab animals for study. But if our child develops brain problems after a DPT vaccination, our doctor will tell us it is coincidence or genetic. Vaccinations have been known to increase the demyelination, a process related to many neurologic disease. Myelin is designed to protect the outer coating of neurons, much like the plastic outer coating over an electrical wire. When this myelin is damaged, neurological disorders, such as , MS, paralysis or ALS, will result. The nerves are short-circuited and many diseases (common today) result, such as mental retardation, hyperactivity, ADD, LD, convulsions, epilepsy, autism. Yet, these conditions are rare in the unvaccinated child.

One author noted. 'It is impossible to deny a connection between vaccinations and encephalitis (brain damage) which follows it.
This paper has tried to address the major sources of neurotoxic substances, but there are many more chemicals, many we may not know about at this time, which can contribute to neurological damage. Therefore, we each need to take an extra measure to protect our minds from these neurotoxic substances, if we are to prevent our minds from deteriorating. We do not have to become a statistic, but we do have to begin now to have a healthy mind as we grow older.
